January & February

2019 brought a plethora of local happenings. From Orange County's School Impact Fee Study to the City of Orlando's recycling program, as well as two legislative delegation meetings, January set the local legislative scene, and tone for the rest of 2019. In February, the Florida apartment industry took the Capitol by storm as they advocated and advanced the wants and needs of the industry at the 2019 FAA Legislative Conference. Our 2019 Legislative Priorities included:

Fair Housing and Landlord-Tenant law are huge hits, and, as they should be. In January & February, both Fair Housing & Beyond & Landlord-Tenant Litigation Scenarios sold out.
In 2020, we intend to ramp up both class curriculums & increase class offerings. Check out the education calendar to see when our first class offerings are! |

OCPS Developers Forum: Orange County Public Schools, in conjunction with Orange County staff, held a Developer's Forum to discuss proposed changes to school concurrency. AAGO worked closely with the county in fee configuration.
At a Winter Springs Commission meeting, the Winter Springs Mayor vetoed approval of multifamily development. He followed up the veto with criticism towards fellow commissioners for approving such development. Stating the development, "stresses infrastructure in a way that reduces the quality of life for all of us." In response, AAGO drafted a letter in conjunction with FAA and NAA refuting his comments. |

Orange County Housing for All Task Force In May, Orange County Mayor Demmings introduced the Housing for All Task Force. AAGO's Chip Tatum and Lee Steinhauer sat on the Task Force, offering industry knowledge helping to create sustainable, innovative solutions to the County's housing affordability crisis. Seminole County Rental Registration Ordinance In June, Seminole County Commissioners heard an ordinance that would have required rental properties rented for more than 181 days to be registered with the County through a third-party vendor. AAGO, as well as, other community stakeholders spoke in opposition to the ordinance, which worked to thwart its approval. |

HB7103 The Governor signed HB7103 into law, effective as of July 1, 2019. As one of FAA's legislative priorities, addressing numerous development-related issues, central Florida began feeling the impacts of HB7103. For example, following the effective date, Orange County had to revise its school concurrency and capacity enhancement agreements to comply with 7103. APAC Check Presentation to Mayor Buddy Dyer In late July, AAGO members gathered at City View Apartments in downtown Orlando to present City of Orlando Mayor Dyer with an APAC Check.

Speed Mentoring In conjunction with AAGO's Future Leaders Program, the Young Professionals Committee helped pilot a speed mentoring night. The event was open to all walks of apartment industry life.
Boots, Bling & BBQ With all event proceeds benefitting APAC and NAAPAC, members gathered at the Winter Park Farmers Market for Whiskey, Wine and a boot-scootin' good time! |
We held our annual Lease-A-Palooza! Which offered moving marketing strategies to leasing professionals, assistant managers, managers, and regionals. |
November & December

Orange County Housing for All Task Force Orange County Mayor Jerry Demmings called on the Task Force to examine potential solutions to address the current housing affordability crisis in Orange County. The Task Force's final report was approved by the County Commissioners in December. Champagne & Diamonds Back by popular demand, we sold Champagne & Diamonds Raffle Tickets at the Golden Key Awards. All ticket proceeds went to support NAAPAC. All in all, we raised almost $3,000 which pushed us closer to our NAAPAC Fair Share Goal. |
